In a move three weeks before the general election, Gov. Ronnie Musgrove's campaign sent word to Mississippi newspapers that it would, for the most part, cut off print advertising for the duration of the campaign. Instead, it would rely on supporters in various communities to pony up money for newspaper ads.

"It's not uncommon," said Byron Pugh, advertising director of the Mississippi Press Association. "Compared to electronic media, particularly television, newspapers have become a second-class citizen.
