WEST POINT, GA. -- When ITC DeltaCom acquired Raleigh, N.C.-based BTI Telecom Corp. earlier this month, it marked the consolidation of two telecommunications leaders in the southeastern U.S., and created the region's largest competitive local-exchange carrier (CLEC). The move is expected to increase the company's market share in Mississippi, where BellSouth is its top competitor.
"Mississippi is a very important state for us," said Drew Walker, president of ITC DeltaCom. "We've had very good success in business with state government. We're working with a lot of colleges throughout the state to provide services and we'll continue to grow in Mississippi, especially as we bring more products and services to the table."
Three years ago, ITC DeltaCom gained market share in Mississippi when it bought Greenwood-based Scientific Telecom. As a result of the BTI Telecom acquisition, ITC DeltaCom's Mississippi presence will increase to 43 employees--18 system representatives and technicians in Jackson, 10 sales executives in Jackson, eight in Hattiesburg and seven in Biloxi.
