When Laura Fehrman first met Rob Rooney, she didn't like him.

Really didn't like him.

Feared him is probably a better way of putting it.

And so the St. Charles resident, at age 12, left the city's youth program.

"He's so intimidating," Fehrman said. "He was going to be my coach. I quit because he was so intimidating. I was on West Chicago up until my freshman year."

Contrast that with how Fehrman, now a senior at St. Charles North, refers to Rooney, her high school coach for the past four years.

"He's so much like a father figure," Fehrman said. "I can tell him almost anything. I'll come in from school one day and I'll have a guy problem and I can tell him. If I'm crying, I can bawl my eyes out to him and his arms are open, no matter when...
