Sometimes it really is the suit that makes the swimmer.

In the case of Rosary's swimmers, those suits were a bit worn by the time the Beads took the water at the Neuqua Valley sectional - and that was the point. Rosary's plan was to save its time-dropping taper and save its time-saving, aerodynamic swimsuits for the state meet.

"I looked at our girls before the sectional meet and I realized how faded their suits were," Rosary coach Bill Schalz said. "It was the 12th, 13th, 14th meet they swam in those suits and they were stretched out. I thought that they were going to be like parachutes on them and I wondered if I'd done the right thing. But these girls stepped up and responded."

If Rosary wouldn't have won a best-dressed contest at the sectional, they are in line to claim a best-in-water award this weekend at New Trier. Rosary is going trophy hunting at this weekend's girls state swim meet, and the Beads are aiming high.

"You always do the P.C. think and talk nice and go 'I want to go to the state meet and get third,' " Schalz said. "But we do want to win it. We're hungry. We want a state title. If we swim really well and get second or third, we'll be very happy. But I don't know if we'll be satisfied."
