A recent survey of what pastors are reading produced a list of authors that included many classic figures like Henri Nouwen and C. S. Lewis (see "Pastors" picks, " August 23). We asked some pastors what more contemporary books are making an impact on them. These are some of the responses:
Aristotle's Children: How Christians, Muslims, and Jews Rediscovered Ancient Wisdom and Illuminated the Dark Ages, by Richard Rubenstein (Harcourt).
This book is both depressing and encouraging: depressing because we don't seem to have learned much since the early Middle Ages; encouraging because, as a good dose of history, it prevents our idealizing the past and demonizing the present. Christians have an appalling history with regard not only to their treatment of people of other traditions but also in their, killing of co-religionists. This book challenges us to repudiate our anti-intellectualism.
