For years, Stauffer has been an East Coast business renowned for its signature Animal Crackers brand. However, purchasing Laguna in 1999 not only opened up new territories for Stauffer products, but also provided the $100 million-plus company with a much more diversified line of products that complemented its existing business, of which 70% is branded and 30% is private label and contract manufacturing. In addition, the acquisition has allowed Stauffer to penetrate the competitive in-store bakery channel.

Overall, the Laguna acquisition has set off a chain of events, including the building of a 217,000-sq.-ft. plant in Santa Ana, Calif. That facility is four times the size of Laguna's cramped 50,000-sq.-ft. Tustin plant, which Stauffer closed because it lacked warehousing and was too small to support Stauffer's rapidly expanding West Coast operation.

The Santa Ana plant will be one of the highlights of the B&CMA's 78th Annual Technical Conference, which runs from October 19-22 in nearby Anaheim, Calif. Attendees will have a chance to tour the $20 million facility on October 22 following the morning sessions.
