High school reunions are curious affairs for those of us who choose to attend. After 20 years, it's natural to want to see how everyone turned out.

But something rather bittersweet happens in a crowded bar, sipping martinis with 38-year-old ex-cheerleaders and band kids. You realize that those people know more about you then you realize.

They knew you when you were most vulnerable. They remember how you treated others. You can fool your new friends, but you can't fool the old ones.

The Churchill High School class of 1983 reunited at the Wild Duck in Eugene this past Aug. 8. I forced my friend Marcia to go with me.
