Oregon - Demetrius Williams , the sophomore wide receiver from Pittsburg, Calif., made his first career start and surpassed previous career totals (five catches, 73 yards, no touchdowns) by catching six passes for 135 yards and a touchdown on an 86-yard reception. When MSU pulled within eight points with 3:04 remaining, Williams also recovered the onside kick attempt that let the Ducks run out the clock.

Mississippi State - Kevin Fant, the Bulldogs' senior quarterback, completed 23-of-40 passes for

285 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for another score.

KEY STAT

Oregon's total offense - The Ducks amassed 556 yards (on 80 plays from scrimmage) to surpass their highest total in any game last season, which was 457 yards in the loss to Arizona State. The offensive yardage - the first time the Ducks gained more than 500 yards since getting 565 at Washington State in 2001 - helped the Ducks overcome two lost fumbles and 13 penalties for 129 yards.
