Remember the artists

I would I Ike to add my support to Jerry Williams' Aug. 20 guest viewpoint. For those concerned, it is thought-provoking and courageous in challenging the protocol of art auctions.

Having participated in the last few museum art auctions, I also am aware of the substantial amount of revenue generated by this event for the museum. Much of what Williams says in assessing the artists' relationship to this event rings true.

Williams makes some suggestions, all of which are reasonable. Among them is the idea that artists be able to set a minimum value on work (to be paid to the artist) - a valid request considering that these selected works are essentially commissioned pieces, often requiring a lot more time and materials. Such an act would constitute a gesture and a gratuity to the artist.

Not only is it of value to have work exhibited, but follow-up as to who purchased a piece and for how much should be mandatory. To the museum's credit, it is the only organization, in my experience, to do so. Though this is not likely to happen with the museum's auction, I have heard of artwork elsewhere selling for a fraction of its value - unbeknownst to its maker, who will continue to donate for the chance to raise the level of exposure.

My perspective is not to malign the many hardworking, dedicated and committed people who work...
