On Aug. 14, the board of directors of FOOD for Lane County concluded, after careful deliberation, that the future of the agency required new management. The board was aware of the excellent leadership Caroline Frengle has provided. The decision to fire her was painful, though necessary.

Unfortunately, Frengle and loyal supporters have made repeated statements since that time claiming that she she was fired without sufficient cause by an irresponsible board.

Out of respect for Frengle, and in the hope of moving ahead quickly with the rebuilding of public trust, the board has been reticent to speak in its own defense.

However, being no longer on the board, I feel fairness requires a response.

Frengle has repeatedly stated that a forensic audit ordered by the board cleared her of any wrongdoing. That is simply false. The audit report offered no conclusion on the data reviewed. The report does tell us that she charged at least $1,576.66 in personal expenses and $5,006.66 in expenses that the auditors could not determine to be personal or business expenses.

The audit also revealed that she has owed money to the agency almost continuously from 2001 through May...
