COTTAGE GROVE - The gruff looking police chief wasn't about to let a couple hundred beer drinkers in bed sheets intimidate him from keeping the peace during the biggest party this town of 8,600 has seen in decades.
Chief Mike Grover was ready for them.
As thousands lined the streets Saturday to mark the 25th anniversary of the filming of `Animal House,' Grover was dressed for duty. Wearing a nondepartment-issue toga, accessorized with a gun belt and night stick, he walked the beat to shouts of "toga, toga, toga."
Grover estimated that 3,000 to 4,000 people lined Main Street for a re-enactment of the parade in the movie's final scene. But he wasn't all that worried that the revelers would get out of hand.
"The people who lived through this are usually in bed by 9 o'clock," Grover said.
For some, it was a homecoming and a chance to recollect the cult movie filmed in Eugene and Cottage Grove. For others, it was an opportunity to see the parade inspired by the movie's raucous closing scene, participate in a look-alike contest, or take part in an all-day toga party.
Grove admitted that he, like most of the toga-clad spectators, was a big fan of the film.
