A second case of suspected bacterial meningitis has a 15-year-old South Eugene International High School student fighting for her life, school and public health officials said Sunday.

Sophomore Christina Norton became ill Sunday afternoon and was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center, where she was in critical condition Sunday night, a nursing supervisor said.

South Eugene High Principal Laurie Moses and six other staff members were working the school's phones Sunday night, attempting to reach the estimated 150 students who share classes with Norton.

Norton's illness appears unrelated to the death of Mani Shimada, a 16-year-old junior at Wellsprings Friends School who fell ill and died last Thursday, said Betsy Meredith, communicable diseases nursing supervisor with the Lane County Public Health Department.
