Imagine paying a visit to the Lane County Historical Museum and walking into the middle of an exhibit on the area's fabled hippie culture of the 1960s.

Far out and groovy, right? With the museum's new director, Robert Hart, at the helm, it just might happen.

That doesn't mean that the tried-and-true collections at the museum - the photos and kitchen implements and hand tools that show us just how tough the grandparents with all those "greats" before their names had it - will go by the wayside.

But Hart, aided and abetted by a board of directors eager for some updating and refurbishing of the historical museum's image, wants to make the place a destination with a lot more curb appeal.

"The public often has a perception of history as an unchanging collection of facts, and it's really a lot more exciting than that," Hart said. "History is always changing as we learn more about it and new things happen. It's never done."
