NOTI - Two families, two homes and more than two ways to run an organic farm.

Jack Gray and his wife, Mary Jo Wade, started Winter Green Farm here in 1980. In 1985, Wali and Jabrila Via became business partners, living out of a mobile home on the property before building their house on it five years ago. Both couples' children have grown up here. Their hearts are here. Their livelihood is here.

All of that is the easy part.

The challenges of running an organic farm over the span of more than two decades have created their share of tough transitions.

A boom in the growing of herbs took off in the 1990s and for a while, the farm was doing well growing esoteric crops and selling them overseas. But then everyone started doing it.
