At age 23, Richard Schoolcraft found himself the owner of a small contracting company in Eugene called Comfort Flow Heating.
The year was 1964. The man who started the company three years earlier, Don Lahmers, wanted to move back to his home state of Minnesota. Lahmers offered the company - and the company's best pickup truck - to Schoolcraft on favorable terms and told him to pay for the shop equipment when he could afford it.
"He said, 'Here you are - run it,' ' said Schoolcraft, who was one of three employees. "He was kind of like a father to me."
Today, Schoolcraft is president of Comfort Flow, which employs 104 people and has a statewide presence in serving and installing heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems for both residential and commercial customers. His wife, Toni, remains involved, managing employees' retirement plans. Their son, Trieber Meador, is the service manager and is being groomed to take over the company.
The company has grown tremendously in the last five years, nearly doubling its work force...
