Even if you've never heard of Forrest Paint, chances are good that you own something - a wood stove, barbecue or bicycle, perhaps - coated with one of its products.

Started in early 1973 by Scott Forrest (favorite color: yellow) with help from his father, the company in west Eugene has grown into an industry leader in specialty paint products.

Its popular StoveBright line of high-temperature stove paints can be found on store shelves around the world. Forrest Paint also makes house paints, a line of deck and siding products marketed under the brand Restore-X, and even field-marking paint for sports fields.

One of its more unusual inventions, FireSnake, is a clean-burning, flammable rope specifically to help railroad maintenance crews heat up rails, as needed for certain repairs.

"Our particular niche is having products that a lot of the big companies don't make," Scott said. "Our stove paint, for instance. We dominate that in the United States, Canada, around the world really. ... We're much more innovative than most companies."

Scott, who has a chemical engineering degree from Northwestern University, launched the business with eight employees, including one chemist. It now has 130 employees, including 14 salesmen and nine chemists.

The 5-acre compound on McKinley Street includes company headquarters, product development and manufacturing facilities and a retail store. The company churns out a million gallons of paint a year.
