There's no mystery in the Midwestern League cross country races this season.

Or is there?

The consensus among league coaches is that South Eugene and Sheldon will dominate the district meet, and easily gobble up the four available team berths for the OSAA state championships to be held Nov. 1 at Lane Community College.

However, nobody is too certain which team will eventually wear the district boys and girls crowns.

You can make a strong case for each team at each school.

The South Eugene girls return two of the state's top runners in junior Erin Gray, the 2002 state champion, and senior Sarah Pearson, who placed fourth at state last season and took second on the track in the 1,500.

Sophomore Lauren Sharp has emerged as the team's No. 3 runner, but head coach Jeff Hess sees no current pecking order involving the Axemen's fourth through eighth runners. They include senior Sarah Albi, juniors Jadie Mollier and Laura Moshofsky and sophomores Lena Sessions and Gianna Palmer.
