Quietly, but ever so steadily, that's Washington that's putting itself in good position for the run at the Pac-10 title that everybody expected, before that poor performance at Ohio State.

Look at the Huskies, 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference after a win over Stanford. They still have the favorable schedule, with USC, Oregon and Washington State all coming to Seattle. The major road challenge is probably Oct. 18 at Oregon State, with the Beavers coming off a bye.

The Huskies have gradually picked themselves up since that bad day in Columbus.

They've outscored teams 79-20 in the second half. They've rushed for 396 yards in the past two games, admittedly against Idaho and Stanford, but the Cardinal were leading the nation in rushing defense until they met the Huskies.

They've still got the league's best passing combination in Cody Pickett and Reggie Williams, who have now hooked up for five touchdowns of 70 or more yards in their two years playing together.

And the Huskies are definitely improved on defense, where bringing in longtime Pac-10 aide Phil Snow to be co-coordinator is paying obvious dividends.
