CORVALLIS - Oregon State's impressive torching of the Sun Devils last weekend did not land the Beavers among the country's top 25 teams.

It did not plant the Pac-10 Conference's favored-team cap on OSU's head, or get them on the cover of Sports Illustrated, or provide coach Mike Riley a new contract.

"All it is," Riley said of the 45-17 win over Arizona State, "is a real good start for the Pac-10 schedule. After that, it doesn't guarantee a thing."

Not in this league, Riley said on Monday, alluding to the obvious - California's three-overtime defeat of then-No. 3-ranked USC and Washington State's overwhelming of then-No. 10-ranked Oregon.
