When the faculty at South Eugene High School met for the first time this fall, it was suggested that the teachers stand up and introduce themselves.

The idea came from 57-year-old John Gillespie, a guidance counselor and veteran coach who is in his second stint as the mentor of the Axemen cross country and track and field programs.

Little did the assembled teachers realize that a subtle shift had already occurred within the athletic department.

`At John's suggestion, everybody introduced themselves,' said Jeff Hess, who has been Gillespie's assistant since 1999. `I stood up and said, `I'm Jeff Hess with the PE department, formerly of the English department ... and I'm John's boss.' '

The announcement brought the house down.

`That was a good lighthearted way of letting the staff know he was in charge,' Gillespie said.

The transition from Gillespie to Hess as head coach in cross country and track and field at South Eugene has been in the works for the past three years. They were already co-head coaches in cross country, and the passing...
