When Colby Taylor shows up at baseball playoff games this month, his attention will sometimes stray from the field.

He'll check out the Atlanta bullpen to watch John Smoltz and peer inside Boston's dugout to see Pedro Martinez. More precisely, Taylor will look to see if Smoltz, Martinez or a handful of other major league pitchers are wearing The Heater, a new training device designed to keep a pitcher's arm warm between innings.

Taylor is the chairman of Innovative Sports, a Eugene company that started in March out of an office on Country Club Road. The Heater is one of the company's first products, and there are about 20 of them currently in major-league clubhouses.

The device is a sleeve that features internal heating elements that are powered by lithium-ion battery packs designed to heat the muscles in a pitcher's arm. The purpose is to help a starting pitcher keep his arm warm for a longer outing or help a reliever get warmed up quickly.
