Since taking her place on the University of Oregon campus in 1932, the Pioneer Mother has always looked sad. But Monday morning, as students plodded to classes on the first day of the 2003-04 school year, the statue seemed particularly down, her countenance mirroring the student body's.

I could imagine her thoughts:

Seven interceptions? Two blocked punts? Fifty-five points? If you can't stand success, guys, stay off the Sports Illustrated cover.

Forget the assuring smell of Williams' Bakery bread. Saturday's 55-16 loss to Washington State - the most points the UO has given up at home since it began playing...
