The era of wired glass in new schools is about to end in Oregon.

The state's Building Codes Division on Wednesday will end a long-standing exemption that permitted wired glass to be used in some locations. The glass slows the spread of fire but breaks more easily than laminate or tempered glass and can cause severe injuries.

Eugene businessman Greg Abel hailed the code change.

"The state of Oregon has taken a courageous step forward," said Abel, part of an ad hoc committee that researched the topic during the past year and a half.
