Steve Perry used to think Halloween was for "amateurs," a holiday for people who needed an excuse to act weird, drink too much and dress funny - all things he already excelled at.

HALLOWEEN MUSIC

"Now that I'm older and way more conservative, I don't drink beer every day. I don't look really strange, so now I guess I can understand it a little more," said Perry, the lead singer of Eugene's Cherry Poppin' Daddies.

Perry may be more mature these days, but he said the Daddies are still freaky enough to celebrate Halloween without having to wear costumes.

Playing under the moniker the Scary Poppin' Daddies, the group will host a Halloween show at the McDonald Theatre tonight that should offer some surprises even for seasoned fans of the punk-ska-swing band.

`The fans are bored of `Zoot Suit Riot,' ' Perry said, referring to the group's signature radio hit from the 1990s. "We'll still play it, but we've taken that (message) to heart. ...

`We've decided to play some songs that we hadn't played in a long time, and we've decided that we wouldn't tell anybody what those songs were."

The Daddies have a long history of playing in Eugene...
