Seven weeks into its first year, the Network Charter School is most definitely still a work in progress.

But then, no one expected any different.

For starters, the ambitious new school is run by seven different community groups, at various locations - a challenging model that's never been tried in Oregon or elsewhere.

Organizers had just a few weeks to prepare for the start of school after the Eugene School District signed off on the details of its charter agreement in August - a timeline that forced them to move at breakneck speed.

An early schedule described course offerings, but organizers weren't sure how many students would sign up, nor what those students would need or want from their new school.

Consequently, things have "evolved" in these first weeks, said Stacey Janssen, one of two assistant directors.

For example, many students needed more physical education credits, so they added a hip-hop, salsa and swing dance class.
