Birth control no path to peace

Eimar Boesjes (letters, Oct. 25) lays the blame of the misery of Third World families at the feet of Pope John Paul II, because the pope continues to uphold two millennia of church teaching against artificial birth control. Because of this, Boesjes proclaims that John Paul II is unfit for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Shirin Ebadi, the 2003 Peace Prize recipient, is a practicing Muslim whose faith also teaches against artificial birth control. Is she undeserving of the prize as well?

Why does Boesjes link the peace prize with birth control? Boesjes states "that a world without birth control is a world of misery." In the past 40 years, developed nations that have widely embraced birth control, especially the United States, have experienced increasing rates of divorce, suicide, murder, sexual abuse and assault - and, of course, those pesky sexually transmitted diseases. Are we free of misery?

Recent history tells us that developed nations with low birth rates wage war as much as those "rabbits" he described in Third World countries with higher birth rates. What does birth control have to do with peace? Nothing!

Birth control does not result in less misery, it just ups the ante. It would be easier to solve world hunger than the misery of social ills that birth control enables in our superior society.
