While the leaders gave speeches, the babies hollered, the dads sat stoic and the moms dabbed their eyes.

Seven hundred more Oregonians head to war this week, and on Wednesday more than 1,000 people gathered to send off the 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry of the Oregon Army National Guard, who head today for Fort Hood, Texas, for preliminary training.

They expect to arrive in Iraq sometime in March and will be away from home for 18 months. It's the largest call-up in Oregon since World War II, military officials said.
