Forward-thinking saxman Joshua Redman is looking to his past to find the music of his future: groove jazz.

"I use `groove' in the very broadest sense of the term, because we're not just a funk band," Redman said by phone from his home in San Francisco. "While the rhythms that we're working with are coming a little more from a funk or rock or whatever basis than from classic swing style, it's very much jazz."

Redman calls his perky sax-keyboards-drums combo the Elastic Band (`for no particular reason'). The band has released one CD (`Elastic') and is recording a second.

With him Wednesday in Eugene will be longtime keyboardist Sam Yahel and guest drummer Ari Hoenig. The concert is part of the Oregon Festival of American Music series, Now Hear This.
