It's a jarring artifact, but perhaps a telling symbol of how much has changed since the steam plant first opened on Eugene's riverfront.

The swastika stands out on a large steel valve on a boiler mothballed long ago as new technologies came on line.

Crane Steel, an American company, used the ancient symbol of peace and prosperity as its logo for years, but stopped in the 1930s as the hooked cross grew to represent the rise of German fascism.

Now, the question becomes: Will the steam plant itself become a thing of the past?

Most downtown businesses still rely on steam heat from the Eugene Water & Electric Board, but the utility's old three-story cement plant stands in the middle of an area targeted by the city for redevelopment near the new federal courthouse.

Once obscured from street view by the old Agripac cannery, the 72-year-old plant is now on full display since the city tore down the cannery this year to make way for the courthouse. That front-and-center prominence has renewed speculation about its ultimate fate.

Will the plant be converted into a restaurant or microbrewery, into trendy condominiums or a museum - just a few of the ideas...
