I was commuting to work through Glenwood about 7:30 one morning last week when suddenly the tip of the five-weight fly rod in my hand bent over and the reel began whining in protest.

Did I mention that part of my commute was by drift boat, on the Willamette River?

In any event, the line was almost down to its backing before the fish finally put a silver exclamation point on its run with a sunlit leap.

Several minutes and a couple of shorter runs later, the 6-pound summer steelhead was netted by Todd Linklater, a Eugene fishing guide who had offered to show me that it's again possible to catch steelhead in the urban section of the Willamette River.

Just to prove that my fish wasn't a fluke, one of Linklater's clients...
