LOS ANGELES - The recent history of Pac-10 football champions is rife with veteran quarterbacks, usually seniors.

Three of the four favorites in the preseason poll of conference media released Wednesday possess such a player. Arizona State, Washington and Oregon State all feature experienced upperclassmen at quarterback, and all received first-place votes in the poll.

The exception is Southern California, which must replace Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer but received 10 first-place votes and 227 points overall to narrowly edge the Sun Devils as the preseason favorite in the Pac-10.

USC coach Pete Carroll's team finished 11-2 and won the Orange Bowl last season, and he thinks that Wednesday's poll results were influenced by those details.
