Amile Deedon

The funeral will be held Aug. 2 for Amile Charles Deedon of Eugene, who died July 28 of congestive heart failure. He was 89.

Deedon was born July 12, 1914, in Yacolt, Wash., to Frank and Nellie Bennet Deedon.

He was a lifetime resident of this area and worked as a heavy-duty mechanic. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Norma Olsen Deedon; two sons, Ed of Redding, Calif., and Les of Fresno, Calif.; a brother, Bill of Noti; a sister, Leora Lake of Noti; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Chapel of Memories Funeral Home in Eugene. Saturday's service will be held at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at Sailor Cemetery in Noti.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Sacred Heart.

Philip Laird

COOS BAY - A celebration of life will be held Aug. 16 for Philip Marvin Laird of Coos Bay, who died July 24 of age-related causes. He was 85.

Laird was born Aug. 27, 1917, in Coquille to pioneers Walter and Mayre Hall Laird. He married Maxine Briner in Coos Bay on Sept. 26, 1948. She died June 25, 1998.

He was a lifetime resident of Coos County and grew up in Sitkum. He joined the Army in 1940 and served with the 249th Coast Artillery Band at Fort Stevens before being honorably discharged in 1945.

He worked as a longshoreman before his retirement. He was also a professional musician and played the alto sax, clarinet and bass fiddle. He played with many dance bands and was a member of the It's About Time Big Band. He was a member of a musicians union. He attended Southwestern Oregon Community College in his 70s and maintained a 4.0 GPA in his music class.

He was a lifetime member of an Elks Lodge and an active member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Coos Bay. His peers selected him as the King of the Coos Bay Clambake in the mid-1990s.
