Casino marketing misguided

Let the Confederated Tribe of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw build their unwanted casino near Florence. According to tribal spokesman Francis Somday, the tribes will concentrate their marketing on the Eugene-Springfield area for unwitting customers eager to lose their week's pay.

Will the people of the Eugene-Springfield area be lulled into making the dangerous trek across Highway 126 to Florence when they can go to the Canyonville or Grande Ronde casinos in about the same time and have a much safer drive? A little research with Microsoft's Trip Planner '98 indicates that although Florence is closer to the Eugene-Springfield area than Canyonville or Grand Ronde, the drive to Florence takes almost as long. According to the trip planned, it takes 80 minutes to drive to Florence, compared to 95 minutes to Canyonville and 96 minutes to Grande Ronde. Throw in a couple of motorhomes on the two lanes of Highway 126, and you can add more time. Is it worth the risk for 15 minutes?

It doesn't take a rocket scientist, after a couple tedious trips over Highway 126, to realize what a mistake it is to drive that road when it's not necessary. The people of Eugene-Springfield area are smarter than that. Why should they risk their lives to come to the casino near Florence when they can go elsewhere more quickly and safely?
