Cancer link undocumented
Recently, Brita Stream, Miss Oregon 2002, suggested in these pages that there is an undisputable link between abortion and breast cancer (Register-Guard, July 21). Never having won a beauty contest, and not looking particularly good in a swim suit, I lack her credentials as a breast cancer epidemiologist, so I went to the literature to find out for myself whether this frightening association has been proven.
Reviewing the research on the subject, it is clear to me that anyone claiming that abortion increases the risk of breast cancer is not using science to promote the health of women but is cynically distorting the data to advance a purely political agenda. Editorials and reviews in the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet and the journal Epidemiology all agree with the National Cancer Institute's finding that there is no good evidence of a link between abortion and breast cancer.
Don't take their word for it, though. Point your browser to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/, the National Library of Medicine search engine, type in the words, "abortion and breast cancer," and see for yourself.
