Last week Emerald Kidsports honored five veteran coaches representing a combined total of 130 years of volunteer service. Recognized along with numerous other volunteers were Berry Kessinger, a Kidsports participant for 42 years - 36 as a coach and six as a player. Jim Hoffman, a coach for 28 years and a past president of the Board of Directors, was honored along with Steve Panter, a Sheldon-area coach for more than 25 years, Gil Hulin, currently in his 24th year and possibly Kidsports' only volunteer to coach in all seven Eugene-Springfield high school areas and Gene Baker, who has coached his children's football, basketball and T-ball teams for more than 20 years. Kidsports Executive Director Ron Gibbs noted that more than 4,500 volunteers contribute more than 450,000 hours each year.
