YAKIMA, Wash. - You could excuse Greg Mathis for getting a little carried away, for over-running second base and getting thrown out during the third inning of the Bears' Sunday night game with Eugene.

The rest of the story is that Mathis was playing his first professional game and had just hammered his first professional hit, a double into the right-center field gap.

"I was running with my head down and I picked up Plum (manager Bill Plummer, coaching third) and got his (stop) sign a little late," said Mathis. "Just a mental mistake."
