Article Excerpt
Byline: Mark Johnson The Register-Guard

The job gets tougher every year, and it's all your fault.

Nearly 200 talented teen writers, artists and photographers from throughout the region applied to become members of the next 20Below News Team. That's a 35 percent increase from last year and about double the number from two years ago.

How'd we get so popular?

We didn't have any time to ponder that question. Instead, we've spent the past eight weeks carefully examining each application and keeping the selection process on track.

Today, we announce the result - a group of 22 eager teen-agers who will become the 10th anniversary edition of the 20Below News Team in the fall. Included in the group are five veterans who return from this past year's team.

The 2003-04 group will include 16 girls and six boys, a typical mix when compared to previous years. About half will be seniors.

Again, South Eugene High and Sheldon High produced the majority of applicants and those two schools landed a big share of team members.

But the team also will reflect 20Below's wide appeal. Making the team this year are students from Siuslaw High in Florence (the first Siuslaw student to ever make the team) and from Marshfield High in Coos Bay.

We'll also have a team member who'll be writing from Thailand while on a student exchange.
