MAPLETON - Four young men were transported to area hospitals with moderate injuries when their van overturned just east of here as they returned from fighting the 650-acre Sulfur Creek Fire Sunday evening.

The white van, owned by Eugene-based Skookum Inc., overturned as it traveled east on Highway 126 near milepost 25 between Mapleton and Walton, an Oregon State Patrol trooper at the scene said.

The van carried 10 crew members, including a driver who apparently fell asleep at the wheel after a long day of work on the fire, the trooper said.

The fire crew was among an estimated 245 firefighters from several agencies who were rotating shifts in fighting the fire as it raged in second-growth forest on private property. The extremely steep terrain and unfavorable weather conditions made the fire difficult to contain, firefighters said.

The fire - one of at least four burning across the state Sunday - was not threatening any homes or campgrounds. Firefighters were hopeful that clouds that blew in Sunday night, with the promise of possible rain, would help their efforts....
