ASHLAND - By Oregon Shakespeare Festival standards, this summer's "Richard II" is a no-frills production.

The set is simple, the lighting low. The costumes look lived in. There is no courtyard or battlefield spectacle, little sex or comedy.

Sound effects are minimal, mostly deep drums and the haunting voice of one female singer. Director Libby Appel and the designers on her team have opted for an almost noirish look and feel.

But no one should leave the theater feeling short-changed, because all of this, and some paring down of the text, serves to keep the focus tight, as William Shakespeare intended, on the poignant fall from grace of a man who probably should never have been...
