It is like a scene from "Gladiator." The Arena, a gigantic garbage pit, awaits. The Enemy, mounds of garbage, rises to the occasion with each dump of a Sanipac truck. The Gladiator - that would be me - prepares to mount his steed, in this case a 41-ton, 338-horsepower bulldozer.

"You ready?" asks Jeff Bishop, Lane County Public Works' waste management superintendent.
