Wearing earplugs and hard hats, Norm Rose and his crews at Western Display Fireworks labor on the explosive edge of creative art each Fourth of July.

With computer accuracy and thousands of aerial shells, some more than a foot in diameter, they will choreograph many of the biggest shows in Lane County this year and the biggest show in the West, the fireworks display on the Columbia River from Fort Vancouver in Washington.

"We'll have a blast," says Rose, the unabashedly enthusiastic pyrotechnician and sales manager for the 56-year-old Canby-based, family owned company.

But, in big shows and back yards, the first and most important step for fireworks fun on the Fourth is safety, according to Rose and other fireworks safety officials.
