The police captain was drunk - Jeff Potter could see that from the moment he walked into the pizza joint.
Potter, a forward for the Russian club team Samara, was just looking to grab a bite to eat. He had learned to avoid the natives' choice of mayonnaise instead of traditional sauce on their pizzas; Potter would just say "hold the mayo" in his broken Russian and dig in.
From the start, though, this night was different. When Potter arrived, the police captain already appeared to be passed out in his seat.
Later, he came to. As the evening went on, Potter found himself in a lively but good-natured debate with the man. The officer was convinced boxing was superior to basketball; Potter, who made his living on a basketball court, disagreed.
Suddenly, Potter had a change of heart. It came just after the police captain pulled out his gun, pointed it directly in the player's face and asked: "Basketball, or boxing?"
"Boxing," Potter assured the captain after collecting himself. The Russian seemed satisfied with the answer, then burst out laughing.
Five years later, Potter can laugh, too.
"He wasn't trying to be a jerk," Potter said recently. "I guess he thought that was pretty funny."
