IN addition to general workshop equipment, the Northam traincare facility also has three railway-specific installations--wheel lathe, bogie drop, and train washer--offering leading-edge technology in their respective fields.

Hegenscheidt-MFD, Germany, has supplied a type U 2000 D double-headed under floor wheel lathe that is housed in a separate building and has an integrated remote controlled shunter vehicle to move trains safely in and out of the lathe. A dedicated on-site facility was chosen for flexible, independent, and efficient management of general and seasonal wheel wear to ensure the maximum availability of trains for passenger service.
