Article Excerpt NORDIC Rail has become an important northern European event since it was first organised in 1995. It has grown in both railway, commercial and techno-economic aspects as the exhibition and conference have expanded side by side.
This year, the main theme of the two-day conference will be the railway politics of the European Union (EU) and the Nordic countries. The starting point on the first conference day, October-8, is the political will and ambition regarding rail issues within the EU, and how the objectives of the EU have actually been implemented, especially in the Nordic region.
"We want a debate where we connect the level of ambition to the concrete problems and obstacles," said Mr Jorgen Nystrom, project leader for Elmia, which organises Nordic Rail. The second day of the conference consists of two parallel tracks, one about passenger traffic with the focus on purchasing issues and competition; and the other about freight traffic covering, among other things, the Northern East-West (NEW) corridor, which will connect the United States, Europe, and Asia (IRJ February p20).
At the beginning of September, Nordic Rail had attracted about 200 exhibitors from about a dozen European countries. They range from industry leaders such as Alstom, Bombardier, Siemens, Alcatel, AnsaldoBreda, Plasser & Theurer, Knorr Bremse, and Westinghouse, to a large number of small specialist suppliers and service providers, especially from the host country....
