Preventing Diabetes

The results of the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) reveal that lifestyle and medication interventions worked to prevent or significantly delay the onset of type 2 diabetes (Diabetes Prevention Program Research Group, 2002). The primary lifestyle changes of diet and exercise therapy proved to be more effective than metformin, a biguanide that improves sensitivity to insulin. An average weight loss of only 15 pounds, or 5%-7% of body weight, was all that was needed to have a positive outcome. This was achieved by making modest dietary alterations, such as lowering total fat intake, and incorporating 30 minutes of exercise per day, such as walking. It is also encouraging to note that the prevention strategies worked for people of all races and ethnic backgrounds.
