If Nadine Browy learned anything during her very recent victory against cancer it is that life is too short and unpredictable to worry about eating too much.

Given her Italian culinary heritage and a lifelong struggle against a generous figure, Nadine says, "I'm not going to waste my life fretting about what I put in my mouth."

Still, Nadine is an aerobics instructor and proud of the fact that despite her excess baggage she is in better shape than a lot of thinner people.

"I can run up a flight of stairs and not get winded," she says.

A generation younger than her brothers, Nadine hung out with her mother and aunts when she was little.

"We didn't have play groups," she said. "My mom and her sisters cooked."

Nadine remembers pounds upon pound of homemade pasta and sausage, jar after jar of peaches and eggplant.

"My earliest memory is standing next to the stove in the kitchen in Elmwood Park," she says.

Nadine would pull up a stepstool so she could reach the stove top and turn over the crepes for the manicotti.

The women made so many that "every surface would be covered with them," she remembers.
