So you're the new kid in town, you're stepping into a role formerly filled by the high-profile founder of the organization, and you and your family are completely new to the United States.
That's the short version of the recent life of the Rev. Derek Carlsen, minister to the Church of Christian Liberty.
Carlsen, 42, was formally installed on May 4, almost a year after his successor, church founder the Rev. Paul Lindstrom, died from cancers of the bile duct and lymph nodes, the same liver disease that killed Walter Payton.
Lindstrom, an outspoken political activist and pioneer of the Christian home schooling movement, was the driving force behind the Arlington Heights-based church whose missionaries work worldwide.
Its Christian Liberty Academy in Arlington Heights serves more than 900 students and provides home schooling materials to thousands more across the nation.
Carlsen was offered the job last September. He saw it as a call from God to continue Lindstrom's work as well as start a new chapter in his own life, since it meant giving up mission work in his hometown of Mutare,...
