No photo or painting does justice to Venice, and no words can express its glory. Venice is a wonderland of art and architecture, of sky and water, of gondolas, palaces, cafes and canals, of romance and dreams.

And it's a pain to visit.

Venice is overcrowded and its prices are staggering. The canals reek in summer, the pickpockets are as quick-fingered as any on the planet and the pigeons take pleasure in targeting visitors to St. Mark's Square (one bombed me the very first morning).

So why go?

Because Venice is simply one of those destinations worth the crowds, the fuss, the cost.

And there are ways to make your visit easier and less expensive. It's obviously best to visit off season, as my wife Nancy and I did. By renting an apartment we saved on lodging costs and on meals cooked at home. We clung to our valuables and clung to our baggage and lost nothing. As for crowding, we found quiet sections of Venice that had the feel of Italian villages. We never solved the pigeon problem, however.

Venice is a watery maze of 170 canals and 118 islands linked by 400 hump-backed bridges. Within its 1 1/4-by-3-mile surface nestle dozens of museums, churches and scuole (guild houses) and countless galleries and cafes. It would take weeks - and keen map reading - to see everything just once. You must pick and choose.
