In an age of Harry Potter and the sorcerers at Hogwarts school, it might be surprising to learn that wholesome Laura Ingalls Wilder and "Little House on the Prairie" continue to thrive.
You'll find this especially so at Pepin, Wis., where the Mississippi widens at the delta of the Chippewa River to become Lake Pepin, 28 miles long, 3 miles wide and a favorite of those who prefer to do their boating under sail.
Close to the birthplace of the famous author, the picturesque little Upper Mississippi Valley river town celebrates the "Little House" writer with museum exhibits, a pioneer log cabin reproduction and an annual festival.
"We get 15-year-old girls arriving here who know everything about Laura," says David Smith, president of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society. "They've never seen the television series, but become fans from reading the books," he says.
