Does your cat love to sit on your lap and express its sincere affection by kneading with its claws in the unretracted position? Ouch! No doubt your feline has probably put snags in a number of your sweaters. Maybe not even your furniture or carpets are safe from destruction.

Perhaps your cat is giving you information you are not processing. The outer layer of your cat's claws are constantly growing and must be shed to expose the new growth within. A scratching post can assist your cat here. If you do not provide your cat with a scratching post, you are telling your cat that the carpet, the furniture, the woodwork and you, are all fair props to assist in the claw-shedding process.

If you have found some of the hollow shells of the outer layer of the claw around the house, you know the cat has been shedding its claws. Some cats will even chew the outer, old tissue off.
